The Best Adventure Activities in Cancun

WRITTEN BY: Carolyn Scott

Heading south of the border for some fun in the sun but not totally into lounging by the pool the whole time? Great! I've got some fantastic Cancun adventure activities you and all your travel mates will enjoy!
Chichen-Itza
A can't-miss adventure is the Chichen-Itza tour. One of the new 7 wonders of the world, Chichen-Itza is one of the most recognized Mayan ruin villages around. Unfortunately, you can't climb any of the structures, but regardless, it's impressive. The ball field and main pyramid are breathtaking and the stories behind them are mega fascinating. On most of the tours, they take you to a super neat cenote (sen-oh-teh) nearby to swim and enjoy lunch.

Xcaret
One of the most relaxing and exciting days you'll have in Cancun will be at Xcaret. Despite its "theme parky" style, the grounds are just breathtaking. The glistening crystal water, the iguanas, dolphins and parrots, as well as all the colorful Mexican culture all over the park is enough to cancel your plans and stay here for days. Xcaret is located right on the ocean, so the swimming pools are actually beaches and inlets. You can snorkel and hang out with gorgeous marine life as well as swim through underground and cavern rivers. But even more outstanding is the evening entertainment. As the sun sets, park visitors are ushered through an Indian Jones-type walkway decorated by performers in historic Mayan and Mexican garb. The arena surrounds a huge floor where hundreds of performers put on a show worthy of an Olympic opening ceremony. The show follows the history of the Mayans and goes all the way through to Modern Mexico. A live Mayan ball game is played, singers and dancers of all ages perform. The nighttime show at Xcaret is not to be missed.
Mayan Ruins
For real adventure seekers, the coolest thing to do in the Yucatan aside from eating, drinking and lounging, is the tours to the Mayan ruins and villages. We especially loved our All-Tour-Native Tours to Coba. The Maya Encounter tour to Coba is the only ruin in the Yucatan that you are still allowed to climb. On this tour you get to zip line, rappel and swim in an underground, freshwater lake. Since you are on an all day excursion, they include lunch at a traditional Mayan village.

Xplor
Xplor is the premiere adventure park in the Mayan Riviera and while they have great daytime activities, Xplor comes alive at night! From night zip lining, to 4 wheeler jungle adventures, to underground lava river swimming tours and more, it really is the best place for some super unique nighttime fun!

The Pirate Assault Tour
Like pirates? The Pirate Assault Tour in Cancun and the Riviera Maya is the perfect nighttime activity for all the family to enjoy! The tour includes a night cruise from Cancun's dock to Isla Mujeres, complete with good music, games, and refreshing drinks at the open bar. The first part of the famous Pirates Assault show on board is continued in an outdoor theater on one of the best beaches of Isla Mujeres after the ship has docked.

After all of these day and night adventures, you're sure to be a little bit exhausted. Don't be shy to kick up your feet by the pool at theJW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spaand treat yourself to a ma
