U.S. Virgin Islands
It's
the combination of the familiar and the exotic found in St. Thomas, St.
Croix, and St. John -- the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) -- that
defines this "American paradise" and explains much of its appeal. The
effort to be all things to all people -- while remaining true to the
best of itself -- has created a sometimes paradoxical blend of island
serenity and American practicality in this U.S. territory 1,000 miles
(1,600 km) from the southern tip of the U.S. mainland.
The
images you'd expect from a tropical paradise are here: stretches of
beach arc into the distance, and white sails skim across water so blue
and clear it stuns the senses. Red-roof houses color the green hillsides
as do the orange of the flamboyant tree, the red of the hibiscus, the
magenta of the bougainvillea, and the blue stone ruins of old sugar
mills. Towns of pastel-tone villas, decorated with filigree wrought-iron
terraces, line narrow streets that climb from the harbor. Amid all the
images you can find moments -- sometimes whole days -- of exquisite
tranquility: an egret standing in a pond at dawn, palm trees backlit by a
full moon, sunrises and sunsets that send your spirits soaring with the
frigate birds flying overhead.
Chances
are that on one of the three islands you'll find your own idea of
paradise. Rent a tent or a cottage in the pristine national park on St.
John, take a hike, kayak off the coast, read a book, or just listen to
the sounds of the forest. Or dive deep into "island time" and learn the
art of limin' (hanging out, Caribbean-style) on all three islands.

New St. Thomas Travel Requirements
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will
require all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and
Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes
the bear’s identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United
States. This is a change from prior travel requirements. The goal is to
strengthen and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens
and legitimate foreign visitors.
However,
the passport requirement does not apply to U.S. citizens traveling to
or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. territories include
the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American
Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana
Islands.
